Kiel cheered derby victory

The handball players of the THW Kiel treated themselves to one or the other beer after 28:27 (13:12) in the dramatic 106th Nord derby at SG Flensburg -Handewitt - the long -since -cold master sparkling wine remained at SC Magdeburg. Thanks to the success in a dramatic game in front of 6,300 spectators, the record champions from Kiel claimed second place in the Bundesliga on Sunday with 50:10 points and pushed the leading master crowned off the frontrunner.

After the sovereign 32:22 (17:11) at HSV Hamburg, Magdeburg can now make the second title win after 2001 perfect on June 2 in the home game against HBW Balingen-Weilstetten. The club world champion, for whom Omar Ingi Magnusson scored twelve goals, is enough. "Chapeau! The team has solved this excellently for all influences, which are also mentally petted at them," praised Magdeburg coach Bennet Wiegert on the Sky microphone.

Pure joy was also at the THW: "That feels very good. We are overjoyed. It is something special to win here," said Kiel's coach Filip Jicha about the victory in Flensburg and announced: "The boys get on the way home Definitely a beer and a day off on Monday. "

"didn't believe many of it"

Like the coach, his protégés were still full of adrenaline long after the game. "Not many believed that we would get the points here. It is extremely difficult in front of this backdrop. That is why we are even happier that we could win," said district runner Patrick Wiencek. And back space-ace Sander Sagosen, with ten goals best throwers, emphasized grinning: "It was really fun."

The THW now has the best chance of being there in the Champions League in the coming season. Only the Foxes Berlin (50:12), who prevailed at HC Erlangen with 31:25, Kiel can still contest the necessary second place. Flensburg (46:14), on the other hand, has to say goodbye to the premier class for a season after twelve years.

THW turns Flensburg's run in the final phase

In an emotionally and passionate northern derby, both teams fought an open exchange of blows, in which the guests took the lead for the first time after almost a quarter of an hour. However, the record champion, who qualified for the final tournament in the Champions League last Thursday, was never able to move out more than two goals.

In the middle of the second half, Flensburg put a 4-0 run from 18:20 to 22:20 - the Flens Arena was now a rabid. The handball thriller was by no means decided. The THW, who has to cope with the months of failure of his seriously injured defense chief Hendrik Pekeler (Achilles tendon tear), fought back and kept his nerve in the dramatic final phase. "It was very emotional. I am very proud that we won," said Jicha.
