Weinzierl bang at FC Augsburg: Reuter knew nothing
The mega bang opened up a hooded Markus Weinzierl for shortly after the final whistle. The coach of FC Augsburg sincerely announced his surprising withdrawal and opened a dilapidated relationship with manager Stefan Reuter.
"I actually wanted to stay here longer," said the former returnee after the 2-1 against SpVgg Greuther Fürth. "For me it is the right decision not to have any more discussions."
Weinzierl only had one contract at FC Augsburg until the end of June. An extension was actually considered a matter of form. There should be conversations with Reuter next week.
It was a "clear sign", however, if there had been no conversations about the future before the last matchday, Weinzierl was bang after the final. In the end, "many reasons" would have been the decisive factor to say goodbye.
Reuter von Weinzierl-Aus surprised
Reuter was not inaugurated by Weinzierl. "No, but he will already notice that," said the 47-year-old coach on the TV station "Sky" when asked.
He finally made the decision after a month -long process only the day before the last home game - and left Reuter on the outside. "I didn't have the impression," replied the former international when asked whether his relationship with Weinzierl had been broken.
"That wasn't planned"
Weinzierl had come back as a hope of hope in April 2021. At that time he replaced Heiko Herrlich three game days before the end of the season. FC Augsburg was 13th - and it was also after the last matchday. The goal of relegation was therefore achieved - like this season.
The Fuggerstädter completed the season as 14th, but Reuter had expected more. "I think the squad is really good that we could have played a stronger season," he said.
"It wasn't planned that way," said Weinzierl after his Blitz-Aus, while his players were celebrated with their families before the fan curves. "My heart hurts too."
For Weinzierl, his return was "how to come home", he said last year. The Straubinger once switched to FC Schalke after four successful years together with Europa League tour 2016. Even then, Weinzierl and Reuter had complained about the communication of the other and showed how burdened their relationship is. Weinzierl later moved to VfB Stuttgart briefly - but both stations were disappointing.
Reuter reacts irritated
Weinzierl knew the environment in Augsburg. His planning was actually "very, very long -term". With the surprisingly announced resignation of club president Klaus Hofmann for health reasons, however, he lost a advocate. "This is a pillar that broke away," admitted Weinzierl. Overall, he lacks a basis for a future in the club.
Reuter reacted irritated to the sudden farewell. "It came very surprising for me," he said. The former national player pointed out that he had agreed with Weinzierl to put together in the coming week and then have discussions about the future. There was a clear timetable. "I won't avoid him, but his decision is to be accepted," said Reuter.
There is no schedule for the coaching search. "We will sit down in peace and find the right trainer for FC Augsburg," said Reuter. When asked whether he was still at FC Augsburg after the summer, the 55-year-old replied: "You can assume that."
There have long been speculation about possible Weinzierl successors. According to information from the "Augsburg Bild", the coach of Borussia Dortmund II, Enrico Maassen, is one of the candidates. First discussions are said to have taken place. Weinzierl now wants to go on a longer vacation.
